8 Things I’ve Learned After One Year Of Working At Zoro
Don’t be in a hurry to create an impact. Be in a hurry to learn.
1. Empathy — Coming from technical background my interaction was very limited but working in the business team at Zoro I have learned to communicate and comprehend with people who have come from different walks of life.
2. Building @ Scale — During my grad school, I used to do projects but never thought of how I could scale and deploy them to production. At Zoro, I have learned to build solutions and develop processes at scale. This exposure has helped me to amplify my thinking.
3. Just Document — TBH, I hate documenting, it’s like why do I need to document when I understand it so well. But documenting my work at Zoro has not only helped me to share my projects with others but also helped me to identify my blind spots.
4. Offer To Help — I love helping people especially when it’s coding or building a dashboard. By writing small SQL scripts, I have learned the entire process of different teams and made valuable relationships.
5. Don’t Hesitate To Set Up 1:1 — When I joined Zoro I wanted to talk to the Manager of Optimization at Zoro but I was too intimidated by him only because of his title of “manager” But I have learned that people are very willing to connect and share their work, you just have to ask. BTW the Manager of Optimization is now my favorite person to talk to every week.
6. Present Often — Sometimes I thought that the work I was doing might not impactful and I don’t need to present. But when I started presenting in the meeting and people asked me questions, I realized how my work affected the business and I felt purposeful. I also improved my communication skill and shared witty facts while presenting which helped me to be vulnerable.
7. The Data Engineering team is your best friend — I didn’t know how important the Data Engg team was until I joined Zoro. While at grad school my world revolved around data science and analytics. As I work with different vendors to get data into our systems, I have realized the importance of data engineering and I love their unique combination of skills.
8. Take Time Off — It’s okay to take that Friday off and make it a long weekend for yourself. I am glad that my manager is very encouraging and understands that sometimes you need a day off for yourself even if nothing is wrong. Working from home has its pros and cons but you should not ignore your personal well-being.
